On your next trip south of the border, explore a sacred underground cavern, called a cenote. Mexico has nearly 7,000 of them scattered throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. What is it? A cenote (pronounced "say-NO-tay”, derived from the Mayan word for “well”) is a natural sinkhole formed millions of years ago. When the region’s limestone bedrock caved in, it left holes in the earth, exposing pools of gorgeous turquoise groundwater below. Ready for some soul-spelunking fun?
You can hike, swim or experience subterranean silence among some of the most spectacular mineral formations in the world.
